The Bridewell Centre

For some local history why not visit the Old Courthouse and Jail “The Bridewell Centre” Built in 1862-63 on a site owned by Sir Edward Waller. The Courthouse was used for the trail of minor offences form time to time it was used for preliminary hearings for more serious crimes, before they were referred to a higher circuit court.

The building contains 8 cells, 2 day rooms and 2 limestone staircases. During a recent refurbishment of the cells, writing was found on one of the cell’s walls. Today the building in used by FAS and the Peter Dee Academy of Music.

The Clare Glens

For those of you who love nature, scenic walking,views and photography, The Clare Glens has it all.

The Clare Glens nature trail that is located close to the village of Newport Co Tipperary. The glens provide an natural boundary divide between Co Tipperary and Co Limerick. It forms a 3km loop trail following the Clare River through a wooded valley.

The Clare Glens is home to many forms of wildlife, such as the rare Red Squirrel, during late spring early summer the river valley is in full blossom with the Rhododendrons.

Glenstal Abbey

Glenstal Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Murroe, Co Limerick. Situated on a 500 acre estate with streams, lakes and woodland paths, this surrounds a castle built in the romantic Norman style. 5 minute drive from Newport, the Abbey, which is dedicated to St Josephs and Columba is home to a community of monks. Activities in Newport

Walking: There are many walking routes to suite all individual needs. The Slieve Felim Way this trail stretched from Murroe, Co Limerick to Silvermines Village, Co Tipperary a distance of 18 miles / 29 Km. The area consists of valleys and hills running east to west, starting with Slieve Felim and on to Silvermines Montains. While avoiding all the peaks, the routes provide scenic views of much of the Region and it is possible to see parts of Co Clare, Limerick, Offaly, and Tipperary from some locations on the route. You can also see sections of Lough Derg and River Shannon Basin.

The route is split into three main sections :

  1. Murroe to Tooreenbrien Bridge
  2. Tooreenbiren Bridge to Toor
  3. Toor to Silvermines.

The trail also bring you into Glenstal Forest, Mauher Slieve , Keeper Hill, Ciamaltha Woods, Glencullo and Knockanroe Woods. For more information

Cycling: There are cycling routes over varying distances of scenic countryside. Bikes can be hired to enjoy the Keeper Hill Cycle, 36 mile / 58km circular tour.

Golfing: Newport is the ideal base for golfing breaks. Many courses including Championship courses are only a short driving distance from Newport.

For those who are not very confident on the golf course, why not pop over to Murroe, Co Limerick for a game of Pitch & Putt.

Fishing: The Shannon, Castleconnell, Co Limerick and the Mulcair are well renowned for Salmon fishing. All species of coarse fish are also available on the Shannon and Lough Derg. The Clodaig, Suir and Nenagh River are used for Brown Trout.
